Sports News
Evelyn Grace Academy students have been involved in a wealth of sports activities and competitions recently. Please read below for reports on their progress:
Football Match
On Monday 22nd March, the Year 7 and 8 boys Grace School Football team travelled to The Elmgreen School for a friendly match. Although the Grace School team had the majority of the ball in the first half, Elmgreen was the first team to score with a fabulous breakaway goal. Our team rallied together and responded immediately with a wonderful team attack which ended with Jivelle Bennett putting the ball in the back of the net. After a hard fought second half that saw both teams presented with many opportunities, the score remained unchanged, ending in a 1-1 draw. We would like to give a big shout out to Zaki Mohamud who stepped up to play out of position as goalkeeper and played an outstanding match.
Well done to all of the boys who represented our Academy with a clear display of excellence, endeavour and self-discipline.

Fencing Competition
Monday 22nd March also saw the Grace School Fencing Team compete against the Evelyn School Fencing team at Brixton Recreation Centre. All students compete gallantly with Vincete Conte Couto winning the most matches on the day. Overall, The Grace School came out on top of the competition although all students displayed an outstanding level of excellence, endeavour and self-discipline. We are looking forward to the next match!

Netball tournament
At the beginning of the day I was excited but really nervous, even before we got on the bus. I started to relax when we were on our way because it seemed like everybody else was a bit nervous too. On the bus we made up a school sports chant, it went " Yellow and green togther we stand, Evelyn Grace- hand in hand". The first team we played were the girls from HAKA's. They were the best team at the tournament and beat us 3 - 1. This knocked our confidence but we quickly regained our strength when we won the next game 6 - 0 against Oasis Academy. Our day continued with a mixture of wins and losses and eventually we didn't get through to the finals but I believe we will next time and we all had a brilliant day anyway.

World Book Day celebrations
March 4th, World Book Day, was celebrated in an entertaining fashion at Evelyn Grace Academy. Storyteller, actress and scriptwriter Carol Russell enchanted students of both small schools with her versions of the Anansi stories and other tales from the oral traditions of West Africa. Her vivid impersonations of the characters and songs brought these stories vividly to life for the students.
Mr Walker presented assemblies on the theme of World Book Day in both small schools, emphasizing how much we value reading for pleasure at EGA. Students and staff shared books that they had recently read and enjoyed. In Evelyn school the occasion finished on a joyful note with the whole school joining in the chorus of Timmy Ije’s memorable ‘My Library Card,’ ably accompanied by William Ihieji and Myles Johnson. Timmy composed his song in music lessons and to quote him, ‘It’s the key to my imagination.’
During the week every student received a free book to take home and enjoy.

Reggie Yates assembly
On Tuesday 9th February 2010 students at the Evelyn school were treated to a very special assembly with successful DJ, television presenter and actor Reggie Yates.
A question and answer session was held where members of learning teams who had achieved excellence so far this week had the opportunity to ask Reggie all about his life and education. Reggie was visibly taken aback by the impeccable behaviour shown by the students and praised the academy for the opportunities it offers children from the local community. Evelyn School became privy to Reggie's chance meeting with his idol, Arsenal footballer Ian Wright whilst learning about how he has achieved all he has in his career and being told of the importance of the support of his family.
The most striking part of the assembly was surely the revelation by Reggie that his 15 year old sister had recently been selected by her school as a student who would be actively encouraged and helped to study at Cambridge University. Students at Evelyn Grace Academy have already visited a number of universities in their short time studying and are continually encouraged to demonstrate the excellence and endeavour which is needed in order to pursue such an ambition. The assembly was a great success as students and staff alike were entertained and informed by an audience with Reggie Yates!
Chinese New Year
Happy Chinese New Year!
Grace School students were recently recommended to the BBC Chinese Service by Ms Wenju Sun, one of the Mandarin Chinese teachers who taught the students last year. She specifically recommended our students for their excellence and endeavour in their learning last year. Mr Xin Li, Programme Producer for BBC Chinese Service, came to Grace School with a crew to record and film our students for a piece on the Chinese New Year. The video content will be seen on two BBC Chinese websites and audio recordings were also produced by the students on why learning Mandarin Chinese is important for our students, which will be made into radio programmes, also available on the internet.
The children are singing a Happy New Year song in Mandarin and at the end of the piece are wishing everyone a Happy Year of the Tiger. To view the students' endeavours please click the link below:
Table tennis tournament
Students from the Evelyn School recently triumphed in the Boys' Under-13 Central London Table Tennis Finals. The team, consisting of students Imran Ali, George Rojas, Daniel Onofeghare and Daniel McPherson, won all but one of their matches. They will now go on to compete at the English Schools Table Tennis Association regional finals in February and, if successful, will then progress to the national competition. We are very proud of their progress and look forward to seeing them continue to display the core values of the academy, excellence, endeavour and self-discipline as they represent the academy in a public forum.

On 6 November, students from Evelyn Grace Academy performed an abridged version of Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' at the RADA Vanbrugh Theatre, as part of the nationwide Shakespeare Schools Festival.

Newsround
On Friday 18th September, 4 students from Evelyn Grace Academy participated in a news report by CBBC programme Newsround on the new Brixton currency, the Brixton Pound. Covered extensively in the tabloids and the broadsheets, our students spoke eloquently and confidently on the issues surrounding the enterprise which intends to encourage local trade and support independent businesses.
