Building project
From the 2010 academic year Evelyn Grace Academy will be housed in a bold, new, state of the art building designed by world renowned architect Zaha Hadid. The academy will be built to a demanding specification designed to create an exciting, attractive, modern building that can accommodate the Academy’s innovative small school structure, make highly efficient use of shared facilities and create excellent facilities for teaching, learning and sport.
The iconic zig-zag shaped building will lie between Loughborough Park and Shakespeare Roads with its main pedestrian entrance on Shakespeare Road and a footpath to the main academy entrance running along side the running track that will run diagonally from the front to the back of the site under the first floor of the building.
The academy’s two specialisms are mathematics and sports and the campus has been carefully planned to include excellent sports facilities. In front of the academy building on the Shakespeare Road side is an all weather sports pitch with a small horticultural garden in front of it in the left corner of the site on Shakespeare Road. Three further pitches are available on multi-use games areas behind the main building.
The building’s ground floor includes he gym and dance studio, drama and music rooms and the academy’s library, careers library and some ICT rooms as well as administrative and catering spaces.
When full, the academy will run as four small schools: two key stage 3 schools: “Evelyn School” and “Grace School” and two upper schools. Each of the schools has its own entrance to its own suite of classrooms and dedicated facilities. The two key stage three schools are located at either end of the building on the first and second floors with the two upper schools above them on the third floor and the sixth form on the second floor.
